Waters defends his NSW Country Championship title
19-year-old Nathan Waters won the 2012 Men’s NSW Country Championship, held at Muswellbrook Golf Club on 3-4 November 2012. Waters, who plays of plus two, shot an incredible nine under par 135 over the 36-hole event, including a five under round of 67 on the first day. He was the clear victor, securing the win by five strokes.
This was the second consecutive NSW Country Championship for Waters, who won the event last year at Queanbeyan Golf Club. This year however it was held at his home club of Muswellbrook, where he was recently crowned Club Champion. Waters took advantage of his home club knowledge, shooting five birdies in a six hole stretch, to go with his 13 pars on day one in a strong performance. Another five birdies on day two, along with 12 pars and just the one bogey saw Waters complete the weekend in style.
Runner up in the event was Mid North Coast's Logan Toms (Woolgoolga Golf Club), who fired a first round score of 73, followed by an equal tournament best round of 67 to finish on 140. Central North’s Ben Lockwood (Tamworth Golf Club) finished in third place, a further stroke behind.
The Hunter River District Golf Association took out the Inter-District Teams event, with a team score of 577. Team members were overall Champion Nathan Waters, Josh Knott, Tom Bateman, Hayden Gulliver, Will Barnett and Dylan Perry.
Runners up were Northern Rivers on 582, followed by the Mid North Coast on 589.
This year 16 Districts (of a possible 20) battled it out for the Inter-District Teams Championship. Teams consisted of six members, with the best four scratch scores each day counting towards the team total.
