Armstrong bound for Pinehurst

Josh Armstrong 2019 US Amateur
ECSTATIC: Josh Armstrong and his 2019 US Amateur invitation.

Josh Armstrong will join fellow NSW State teammates Jordie Garner and Blake Windred in next month's US Amateur Championship after qualifying in Georgia overnight.

The Canberran finished at six-under-par for two rounds to grab the final spot on offer at the Capital City Club in downtown Atlanta and ensuring his place in the field for the 119th running of the world's premier Amateur Championship.

Things weren't looking great for Armstrong after opening with a 69 on day one, but a bogey-free second round got the job done in style.

Five birdies in the first eight holes set the tone for the day, and with a cool calm head, Armstrong closed the deal with 10 straight pars to sign for a 65.

The usually reserved teenager was thrilled with the result, saying he knew staying patient throughout the second round was the key to progressing.

"I got off to a hot start today, which put me in a good position.

"I didn't hole much yesterday, so I said to myself be patient and not force it," Armstrong said.

Despite boasting a playing record which includes a couple of world ranking event wins and an appearance in the Junior Presidents Cup, it will be Armstrong's first appearance in the Championship.

"it's a perfect stepping stone for what I want to do," he added.

Between now and then, however, Armstrong has a busy schedule of tournaments to negotiate, beginning with the Pacific Coast Amateur at the University of New Mexico next Tuesday.

Following The Pacific Amateur, it is the fabled Western Amateur in Michigan, then the Canadian Amateur in Nova Scotia.

"I've got three in a row. I'm not sure I'll play the Canadian Amateur yet, We'll see."

Following the Canadian Amateur, it's express to Pinehurst for the 20-year-old, where he is expecting a posse of friends and family to be there to cheer him on.

"Mum and Dad are going to fly in, and my Girlfriend Doey (Choi), is staying on after she finishes playing in the Women's Amateur," he said.
