Josh Armstrong has recovered from a horror start to his round to climb into a tie for ninth place after 54 holes of the Men’s Canadian Amateur Championship in Ontario Canada overnight.

The 18-year-old dropped four shots in his opening five holes today before steadying the ship with four birdies over the remaining 13 holes to sign for an even par 70 at Toronto Golf Club.

Newcastle’s Blake Windred and Castle Hill’s Daniel Gale are well back, in 41st and 49th position respectively.

Californian Aguada Camilo leads by a shot with one round to go at seven under par. Americans Stratton Nolan and Zach Bachou sit alongside defending champion Hugo Bernard one shot back at six under.

The Canadian Amateur is the third oldest Amateur Championship in the world, after The Amateur Championship, and the Australian Amateur. For many contestants this week, it is their last chance to Qualify for next week’s US Amateur at Riviera Country Club, as the winner receives an exemption into the field and a start in the 2018 RBC Canadian Open on the US PGA Tour.
