Avondale has been crowned the Golf NSW Women’s Division One Major Pennant Champions for 2017.

In a high-quality affair, the upper North Shore side got the better of the highly credentialed Concord outfit three matches to two in a result that was decided by the last match on the 18th hole.

Before the final-hole dramatics, though, it was June Song and Bella Kil who struck early for Avondale defeating their opponents Antonia Gonzalez and Belinda Ji, by margins of 4&3 and 5&4 respectively to set the tone for a tense afternoon.

Concord, however, weren’t giving up lightly and when Kim Yerin and Sophie Yip recorded wins for the Inner West team, the final was all square at two matches apiece with the result hinging on the game between NSW representatives Grace Kim of Avondale and Concord’s Doey Choi.?

With Kim holding a one-hole advantage playing the par-four 18th, and the green surrounded by spectators, Choi stumped her approach to about 4 metres, while Kim, playing conservatively, landed her approach on the front edge of the green.

Kim, playing first, lagged her putt to about two metres, leaving Choi with a tricky downhill putt to win the hole and extend the match to the 19th.

With plenty of the gallery’s hearts in their mouth, Choi’s putt shaved the hole before coming to rest just inches past. Kim then calmly stepped up and confidently holed out to claim the match and the Division One Women’s Major Pennant for Avondale, the first in the club’s history.

Avondale Team Manager Sharon Thompson was thrilled for her charges.

“Their attitude is unbelievable. The camaraderie is second to none,” beamed Thompson. “They are a special bunch of girls.”

It was the first time in three years that Avondale had made the Women’s final and to win the Pennant at the first attempt exceeded the expectation of many of those involved. The celebrations planned at the club were already starting as the final putt dropped.

“There’s going to be a celebration at the club. Canapés, drinks and support from the members, it’s already underway,” Thompson grinned.
