Boulton, Crichton dominate Mid Am

Mark Boulton
NSW Mid-Amateur Champ for 2017, Mark Boulton

Victorian Mark Boulton has taken out the NSW Mid-Amateur Championship today with a wire-to-wire performance at Tocumwal Golf Club.

Boulton, from Phillip Island Golf Club, carded rounds of 71, 73 and 72 to finish with an even-par total of 216. Four shots behind him was Macquarie Links’ Jason Webb, while James Orpwood from the Dunes Golf Club was another shot back in third.

The 44-year-old Bolton was thrilled with his front-running victory.

“I played fairly solid, hit fairway and greens. I missed a few putts here and there, but overall I am pretty happy.”

Even though there were a few final round butterflies in his stomach, and despite a couple of wayward tee shots early, Boulton kept a solid hold on his lead all day.

“I didn’t start so well today. I carved one into the trees and had to punch out, but I made a long putt for par, and then on the second hole made another long one,” he said.

“I thought I was going to give my lead back early.”

“I felt a bit of relief on the the third, I moved on and got it back on track,” he smiled.

Bolton is no stranger to the winner's circle in the national Mid-Amateur ranks. He has won previously the Victorian Mid-Amateur, the South Australian and New Zealand Mid-Amateur( twice) and is a former Australian Mid-Amateur Champion.

This was Bolton’s first attempt at the NSW Mid-Amateur Championship, and he was justifiably proud of the win.

“It’s on par with a few others, for sure,” he said. ”I’ve wanted to play this for a few years, but the timing hasn’t been right.”

“First time - first win, not a bad record,” he laughed.

The winner heaped praise on the Tocumwal course and his supporters back at Phillip Island Golf Club.

“The condition of the course this week has been just fantastic.”

“I want to thank the club back at Phillip Island for their support too,” he added.

As for a potential defence in 2018, Bouton was straight to the point.

“I would love to defend, depends on where it is. I’ll be doing my utmost to get there for sure,” he laughed.
