Defending champion Harrison Endycott and his NSW Men’s team counterpart, Travis Smyth sit in a three way tie for the lead after the first round of the Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club, New York.

Endycott recorded six birdies and two bogies while Smyth went bogey free as the pair carded matching four under par 66’s on a day where scoring was tough.

“I played really solidly. I didn’t miss too many shots.” a happy Endycott said following his round.

“I felt I did a great job getting my next shot into position, and when I was in position, I capitalised.”

“I did get the best out of my round today,” Endycott grinned.

Smyth was equally satisfied following his round and is extremely confident about his chances in the tournament with the way he is playing.

“I didn't miss a shot. I only hit two average shots today and ended up making par and birdie from them.”

“Usually when I play this solid I can shoot six, 7, or 8 under, but this course is playing tough.”

“I Gave myself so many great looks.”

Smyth wasn’t surprised at the spread of scores recorded by the 72 person field.

“There was at least a one club wind out there and the rough is so thick,” he explained. “ It’s a tough golf course.”

Of the others playing this week, Newcastle’s Blake Windred sits in a tie for 21st
after a one over par 71, While Bonnie Doon’s James Grierson, fresh off qualifying for next month’s US Amateur, seemed to suffer the effects of a cancelled connecting flight to Buffalo for the tournament and carded a dissapointing 83.
