Golf NSW welcomes new Director Peter Mitchell

Golf NSW welcomes Peter Mitchell as its newest Board Member following the AGM held on 29 October.  Peter is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Central Western District Golf Association which has over 2600 members in the region.  He has enjoyed the sport for over forty years and felt it was the right time to give back to a sport and past-time that has given him so much.

Peter was a General Manager of the Duntryleague Golf Club in Orange for two years in 2004 and 2005.  He went on to serve on the Board on three occasions.  He is also a country member of Concord Golf Club in Sydney where he played Pennants and Eric Apperley.  He continues to follow these competitions with interest every year.

He feels his real estate background gives him a good understanding of what people want in their lives and said, “…golf is no exception. As a community in golf, we have to create a bond that brings people back to their game.  This can be done in part by focusing on converting those that play golf into golfers.”

He was first introduced to the game when he was about ten years old. Although Peter’s grandparents were avid golfers, he didn’t take up the game until he was introduced to it by his friends.  When he and his hockey mates went to Tamworth, they invited him to play.  He was instantly hooked on the game and has not looked back since.

He shares his passion for golf with his son, Cameron, who is in his third year at the PGA IGA in Queensland pursuing a career in the golf industry.  Peter hopes to bring to the table ‘youthfulness’ and country values.  He would like to get more high school students involved in the game by working with the Department of Education and with the Office of Sport & Recreation.

The Golf NSW Board thanks retiring Director Darrell Watts for his contributions throughout the years. As one of Golf NSW’s inaugural Directors, Darrell served on the Board for four years and was also heavily involved in the NSWGA.   He was a Council Member of the NSWGA for five years, served on numerous committees which included the Match, Marketing and Development, Course Rating Sub-Committees and was Chairman of the High Performance Committee.

The nine Directors who form the 2014-2015 Golf NSW Board are Chris Allen (Pennant Hills), Gemma Dooley (NSW & Moore Park), Sue Fabian (Pennant Hills), Frank Gal (Richmond), Alan Harrison (Federal), Peter Mitchell (Duntryleague), Lynne Ritchie (Lithgow), John Robinson (Elanora & The Australian), and Andrew Tharle (Royal Canberra).
