Juniors get Presidents Cup shot

Min Woo Lee

“Some awesome news. This is new goal.”

So tweeted Min Woo Lee today, signifying the young West Australian’s delight at the announcement of the inaugural Junior Presidents Cup.

To be held on the Monday and Tuesday of Presidents Cup next year in New Jersey next September, and just as the open-age event, the junior version will showcase the best junior golfers from around the world (excluding Europe) against those of the United States.

Two teams of 12 – International and USA – will be chosen from the best players on the world rankings aged 19 or under. They will compete on the Plainfield Country Club, twice host of the US PGA Tour’s playoff event the Northern Trust,  nearby the Liberty National where the pros will do battle later in the week.

The first cut of 11 for the International team will be made by the world amateur rankings at 3 August 2017, while the 12th and final player will be added from the same list at 6 September. The American team will be selected via AJGA rankings. The tournament will be held on 25-26 September.

Lee, a member of the Golf Australia national squad, won the US Junior Amateur championship earlier this year and would be a likely starter on the International team.

But with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player the honorary captains of the teams and present during the week, there’s no doubt the Junior Presidents Cup will quickly become a priority for all of Lee’s peers.

Melbourne’s Cameron John and Perth’s Freddy Lee would also be in the mix on current rankings.
