Little Joy for four at Trans Miss

There was little joy for the four NSW players contesting the Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship when severe lightning and thunderstorms washed out the final round at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Kansas.

Former State Junior Representative and Bonnie Doon representative Ruben Sondjada, who finished runner up in this event last year at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, was the pick of the bunch, finishing at one over par after three rounds.

Sondjaja, who has recently completed his studies at Iowa State, carded scores of 72, 69, and 71.

Next best was Castle Hill’s Daniel Gale, who carded a respectable third round even par 70 to go with his opening two rounds of 71 and 77.

Dylan Perry, runner up at last month’s Amateur Championship, had a quiet tournament with rounds of 74, 74 and 75 to finish in a tie for 61st, while Bonnie Don’s James Grierson had rounds of 77 and 73 to miss the cut by two shots.

The tournament was won by 22-year-old Californian Cameron Champ, who finished tied for 32nd at last month’s US Open at Erin Hills.

The Trans-Miss Amateur is one of the United States most prestigious titles, with names like Jack Nicklaus (1958, ’59), Ben Crenshaw (1972), Deane Beaman (1960) and Bryson DeChambeau (2013) all inscribed on the championship trophy.
