Shae Wools-Cobb was late into the field for the US Amateur, but he certainly capitalised on winning his place in the prestigious event.

Wools-Cobb, 21, is the leading Australian after the first round of the championship being played in Los Angeles.

The Sunshine Coast star carded a one-under par 69 at Riviera Country Club to be tied-15th after the first round of strokeplay.

Wools-Cobb, who came through the Queensland Academy of Sport golf program and hails from Maroochy River Golf Club, won the Northern Territory Amateur last year in Darwin, and reached the top eight at the Australian Amateur in Melbourne.

He had five birdies and four bogeys on the opening day in Los Angeles, having been added to the field a few days ago as an alternate in recent days after finishing second in the qualifying stage.

Seven of the 11 Australians in the field at Riviera and Bel-Air Country Club are inside the top 64 who will proceed to the matchplay phase after tomorrow's second strokeplay round.

They include New South Welshmen Travis Smyth and James Grierson (even-par 70, tied 27th) and Victorian Blake Collyer (70).

The Hunter Valley's Dylan Perry, the Riversdale Cup winner, shot one-over par at Riviera to sit tied-45th.

Western Australia's Minwoo Lee and Sydneysider Ruben Sondjaja also are just inside the top 64 after posting two-over par rounds at Bel-Air.

Western Australia's Kiran Day (73 at Bel-Air) and Victoria's Mathias Sanchez (74 at Bel-Air) have some work to do tomorrow to progress any farther.
